Len’s Life

Created by Philip 3 years ago

Len grew up in Cosham. He was the youngest  of four Children and was brother to David, Brian, Barbara. Over the war years, he stayed in Portsmouth and often retold stories of watching the German bombers overhead. He played in the bomb craters and helped build an Anderson shelter in his Mum's garden.

Len met Maureen at Copnor Methodist Church when Len was taking photographs of the Brownie pack that she was helping with. Len loved photography and set up his own darkroom in every house he lived in. We’ve all got happy memories of those photos; despite the excessive number.

In his younger days, he was an active lifeguard on Southsea beach, with even a mention in the press of one rescue. He loved swimming and completed the pier to pier swim numerous times, however, he never completed the cross Solent swim that he so wanted to do.

He left school at 13 and loved tinkering with electronics, even building his first T.V. (which even worked !). This love of electronics led to him joining the Portsmouth News in 1950. One of his first jobs was to remove the morse code system to upgrade to teletype technology. He did his best to keep abreast of technology and was happy to use the iPad, stream music and do more than many of us can do!

Len was skilled in all aspects of DIY, very meticulous and always wanting to help everyone. The garden has been his love, many items he made have outlived him. It give him so much pleasure during the isolation of the COVID restrictions.

As his mobility in recent years came to frustrate him, he has taken comfort in his love of music, reading and often beating Maureen at the nightly Rummi-Kub sessions.

Len married Maureen in Sept 1956 and they would have been celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary later this year. He has two children, Philip and Heather, 3 grandchildren, Christopher, Victoria and Meg and recently, a great granddaughter, Libby Grace. He was so proud of them all. He’ll be missed by all his family and friends.
